A statement from ASAP

Mass shooting at Robb Elementary

In just the last three weeks our nation has experienced three mass shootings that have claimed the lives of nearly three-dozen Americans in New York, California, and most recently Texas.

Today, we grieve alongside the entire Robb Elementary School community as they deal with the devastating and unfathomable loss of 19 students and 2 staff.

Our hearts go out to all the victims, the families, and the communities affected by these horrendous and senseless acts.

The tragedy at Robb Elementary is one of more than 200 mass shootings this year. It is the 27th school shooting this year.

Currently, communities throughout our city are also suffering from the scourge of gun violence. Recent shootings outside of Mastery Prep Elementary and Duckrey Elementary have left many students in our city “petrified to go to school.”

This year alone, more than 100 children in Philadelphia under the age of 18 have been victims of non-fatal and fatal shootings. Each incident is a terrible trauma to the families and communities involved.

As a partner to more than 100 schools, ASAP’s thoughts are with all of the students and teachers in Philadelphia and throughout our country that have to endure this endless cycle of fear and violence. You deserve so much better.

Although the details may differ, all three tragedies reflect our collective failure to address the ignorance, indifference, and racism that is making every corner of our society unsafe for our children, for our educators, for our neighbors, and for ourselves.

Gun violence is not a red state or blue state issue. It is not a city, suburban or rural issue. It is an American issue.

Without all of us speaking out, there will be no action. Without action, there will be no change.
