Scrabble is a fantastic educational tool masked by fun and competition. The benefits of Scrabble include increased vocabulary, spelling and math skills as well as critical thinking skills, teamwork and sportsmanship. Through ASAP Scrabble clubs, students interact with dedicated mentors and a positive group of like-minded peers while building their skills. ASAP provides training, materials, placement assistance for volunteers, and ongoing support for volunteers and site partners. Scrabble trainings are held throughout the school year and are instructed by John Green, a member of the Philadelphia Scrabble Club and the National Scrabble Association, and an ASAP Scrabble club leader himself.

ASAP provides

  • School Scrabble kit (6 School Scrabble boards, 6 sets of Scrabble tiles, and 1 Official Scrabble Players dictionary)
  • Scrabble club manual (includes basic strategies for leading a youth scrabble club, useful wordlists and a guide to online School Scrabble resources)
  • Scrabble coach trainings
  • Scrabble Slam! deck
  • Special Event Opportunities

Site Responsibilities

  • Identify a Scrabble club leader or work with a volunteer recruited by ASAP
  • Identify a space and time for the club’s weekly meeting
