Look for ASAP's Directory of After School Programs, published in The Philadelphia Daily News. ASAP staff will also be handing out copies of this free resource, which is organized by zip code, during the morning commute as well as during lunch hour. Look for them in their red t-shirts near 15th and Market streets!

Philly Plays Scrabble Kick-Off

ASAP's literacy initiative, Philly Plays Scrabble, will kick-off for the school year at the Central Branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia. Students from throughout the city will then continue to play Scrabble weekly in ASAP Scrabble clubs at schools, libraries, and community centers throughout the city! The Eagles Youth Partnerships sponsors its annual all-day chess tournament for more than 200 of Philadelphia’s most competitive school-age students from ASAP’s Philadelphia Youth Chess Challenge, with a special awards ceremony in the Eagles locker room. Chess Challenge students also will have an opportunity to flex their chess muscles in scrimmage games against several Philadelphia Eagles players. In addition, this year’s tournament will feature a chess simul with local chess expert Chris Miller playing 15 students at one time.

ASAP's "Philly Plays SCRABBLE®"


October 2009: Philly Plays Scrabble Month, ASAP Hosts City-Wide Novice Scrabble Tournament
Each October, in partnership with the Free Library of Philadelphia, ASAP kicks off the Philly Plays Scrabble program with a month long city-wide celebration. Throughout the month, participants of all ages are invited to play Scrabble with other members of the Philadelphia community at designated branches of the Free Library. The celebration will culminate in a Saturday tournament for elementary, high school and adult unrated players at the Community College of Philadelphia. About "Philly Plays SCRABBLE®"
Since 2006, ASAP has organized youth Scrabble clubs in schools; community and recreation centers, libraries, places of worship and homeless shelters across the city. Recognized by City Council as a citywide literacy initiative, Philly Plays Scrabble now includes more than 60 clubs and 700 students in 2nd -12th grades.

ASAP Scrabble events provide motivation for youth to improving their skills. Through these events, ASAP aims to expose students to cultural and educational institutions throughout the city as well as to a diverse community of youth from various neighborhoods who share their interest in Scrabble. New in 2009! Philadelphia Scholastic Scrabble League
In response to the growing demand for Scrabble competition from our high school clubs, ASAP is forming the Philadelphia Scholastic Scrabble League. Interested ASAP high school teams from across the city will compete in weekly matches at Carver High School of Engineering and Sciences, during a January-April season. The season will culminate in a final round and awards presentation during ASAP's annual "Spring into Scrabble" event. For more information on the high school Scrabble league, or starting a high school Scrabble club, please email SCRABBLE®@phillyasap.org or call 215-545-2727 ext. 10.

Start Your Own Club for Kids!
SCRABBLE® is a fantastic educational tool masked by fun and competition. The benefits of SCRABBLE® include increased vocabulary, spelling and math skills as well as critical thinking skills, teamwork and sportsmanship. Through ASAP Scrabble clubs, students interact with dedicated mentors and a positive group of like-minded peers while building their skills.

ASAP provides
  • School Scrabble kit (6 School Scrabble boards, 6 sets of Scrabble tiles, and 1 Official Scrabble Players dictionary [OSPD4])
  • Scrabble club manual (includes basic strategies for leading a youth scrabble club, useful wordlists and a guide to online School Scrabble resources)
  • Scrabble coach trainings
Site Responsibilities
  • Identify a Scrabble club leader
  • Identify a space and time for the club’s weekly meeting
  • Communicate the number of participating students to ASAP
  • Provide logistical/technical support for ASAP volunteer club leaders
Club Leader Responsibilities
  • Minimum one hour a week commitment to their chess club(s) for a period of a semester (September-December. and January-June)
  • Share email address with ASAP for weekly communication
  • Participate in introductory training (1 hour)
  • Communicate data on club participants as well as good stories to ASAP.
  • Participate in special events and tournaments (optional)
